Charles Condomine folgt einem Geistesblitz, um seine Schreibblockade zu lösen. Er nimmt die Dienste des Mediums Madame Arcati in Anspruch. Die löst nicht die Blockade, sondern ruft den Geist der verstorbenen Ehefrau auf die Erde zurück. Die ist wenig begeistert von der Tatsache, dass Charles nach ihrem Tod wieder geheiratet hat. Die rechtmäßige Ehefrau wiederum muss plötzlich mit einer Konkurrentin leben. Das führt zu bösem Blut und jeder Menge Zickenterror. Dazwischen steht Charles, der nicht weiß, wie er das Theater ertragen soll.
